MVS Junior is Treasurer for a Day

Johnathan '27 recently stepped into the role of Honorary Montgomery County Treasurer for the Day, gaining firsthand experience in county financial operations, public service, and economic development alongside Montgomery County Treasurer John McManus.

Johnathan's day began by shadowing the Treasurer’s Cash Management and Investment Departments, where he observed how taxpayer dollars are safeguarded, invested, and strategically managed to support local schools, municipalities, and public projects. He also participated in a roundtable discussion with Kettering Mayor Bryan Suddith, learning about the economic development priorities that drive growth in the largest first-tier suburb in Montgomery County.

He then sat in on a detailed working session examining Special Improvement District (SID) assessments and downtown development initiatives in partnership with the Downtown Dayton Partnership, gaining a clearer understanding of how public and private stakeholders collaborate to revitalize neighborhoods and expand local opportunities.

Treasurer John McManus praised Johnathan's enthusiasm and dedication, saying:
“Watching Johnathan explore public finance with such enthusiasm was truly inspiring. Young people like him remind us why investing in the next generation of civic leaders matters. He approached every discussion with maturity and purpose.”

Johnathan shared that the experience deepened his commitment to public service: “Participating in the Treasurer for a Day program in Montgomery County gave me a firsthand look at how local government works behind the scenes. It strengthened my interest in public service and showed me how important financial leadership is to a strong community.”

The Treasurer’s Office launched the Honorary Treasurer for the Day initiative to provide students with meaningful opportunities to explore careers in finance, government, and civic leadership. Each participating student spends a full day in the office engaging directly with county leaders, learning about public finance, and seeing how responsible fiscal stewardship supports the region’s long-term success.
