  • Associate Director of Innovation

    Title: Associate Director of Innovation
    Reports to: Assistant Head of School

    The School
    The Miami Valley School (MVS).  Our mission is to challenge young people of promise to become self-sustaining learners and compassionate global citizens.  For 60 years, MVS has provided a unique learning option for families in the Dayton, Ohio, community.     The Role   
    MVS seeks an Associate Director of Innovation who will cultivate an inclusive, welcoming environment that encourages participation from individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels. This inspiring, creative person, in collaboration with the Assistant Head of School, is responsible for developing and implementing a forward-thinking vision for the Reddy Student Union Innovation Labs, identifying emerging technologies, trends, and opportunities to assure the Innovation Lab’s capabilities and impact. Simultaneously, the Associate Director of Innovation oversees and leads the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Reddy Student Union Innovation Labs. This individual will teach one upper school elective each term in addition to supporting the training of faculty and students wanting to utilize the space and associated resources within it, assuring it serves as a hub for creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning across all divisions.

    • Demonstrate a strong knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, and opportunities to assure the Innovation Lab’s capabilities and impact;
    • Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends for events or workshops;
    • Support the pursuit of grant opportunities as they arise.

    Primary Responsibilities
    As this is a new role, these are the things that need to be addressed in the near term. 

    • Establish and ensure compliance with safety protocols, policies, and best practices for all equipment in the Innovation Lab;
    • Develop and execute a forward-thinking vision for the Innovation Lab aligned with the School’s mission and goals;
    • Responsibly managing Innovation Lab budget/expenses in accordance with Business Office guidelines;
    • Collaborate with the Assistant Head of School to establish a continuity of curriculum and instruction from early childhood through 12th grade;
    • Create and oversee the Innovation Lab Advisory Board by holding regular meetings to connect with the community, solicit feedback, and stay on top of recent trends in the field;

    The following are the long-term goals that need to be addressed. 

    Leadership and Management: 
    • Maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, electronics, woodworking equipment, and other fabrication tools;
    • Manage the physical labor of maintaining the Innovation Labs and associated resources;
    • Provide hands-on support and guidance to Innovation Lab users on equipment and project development;

    Programming and Education: 
    • Teach an upper school Innovation course in the fall and spring terms.
    • Lead/Co-lead/Support a January immersion term program or January Immersion Term Programs based upon the needs of the School;
    • Fulfill all other responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, including writing progress reports and planning, etc.
    • Organize events, challenges, and exhibitions to promote a culture of innovation and showcase projects: 

    Community Building and Outreach: 
    • Participate in the life of the school, attending school-related functions, which include but are not limited to: Caregiver Information Nights (CIN), Graduation, the Maker Faire, etc.;
    • Offer three or more week-long summer camps and after-school programs for students in the Innovation Lab;
    • Partner with Admissions to provide STEAM opportunities for prospective students and their families, ex.) A STEAM night;
    • Develop partnerships with external organizations, schools, businesses, and industry leaders to enhance resources and opportunities for Innovation Lab users;
    • Partner with the Director of Communications to promote the Innovation Lab through marketing, social media, and community engagement initiatives;

    Innovation and Strategic Growth: 
    • Identify emerging technologies, trends, and opportunities to expand the Innovation Lab’s capabilities and impact;
    • Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of Innovation Lab activities, gathering feedback to improve operations and the educational program. 

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in engineering, design, education, art, technology, or a related field.
    • Hands-on experience with tools and technology commonly used in Innovation Labs;
    • Experience managing and maintaining an Innovation Lab, fabrication lab, or similar environment, preferred
    • Experience teaching engineering, CAD, or STEAM subjects at the secondary or collegiate level;
    • Background in education, program development, or community engagement is highly desirable;
    • Ability to foster collaboration across diverse groups and effectively manage multiple projects;
    • Ability to work with minimal levels of guidance and high levels of initiative;
    • Demonstrated a curious and inquisitive nature, particularly related to solving problems and discovering how things work.

  • Middle School Spanish Faculty

    Title: Middle School Spanish Faculty (also teaches 1 course in upper school)
    Reports to: Middle School Division Director

    The Role
    The Middle School Spanish Faculty must be a passionate and skillful teacher, who is eager to invest their talents in our world language program. They must establish a supportive and engaging environment for middle school students (grades 6-8) and Spanish I upper school students. This faculty member must demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. In addition, this teacher will have completed coursework or possess teaching experience in Spanish, and they should be committed to the ACTFL language proficiency standards and have a passion for sharing Spanish speaking cultures as manifested in music, films, cuisine, art and literature.

    Expectations

    • Develop a lifelong appreciation for healthy and informed decision-making in their students;
    • Demonstrate an ability to develop rapport with students;
    • Commit to ongoing professional development;
    • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics;
    • Communicate with parents, both orally and in writing, effectively and often;
    • Meet all other expectations and responsibilities as outlined by the Faculty Handbook;
    • Demonstrates an understanding of the ACTFL standards and teaching for language acquisition;
    • All faculty can expect to travel with students (grades 4-12) for 1-3 weeks per year;

    Primary Responsibilities
    • Teach 6th grade Spanish, Spanish 1A (7th grade), Spanish 1B (8th grade), and upper school Spanish 1;
    • Lead/Co-lead an Immersion term program in January, most often involving travel with students;
    • Develop and propose new Immersion programs;
    • Update Canvas and RamsConnect, MVS’ Learning Management System (LMS), regularly to keep both students and families informed about student progress and performance;
    • Attend faculty meetings;
    • Fulfill all other faculty responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, such as; chaperoning student events, attending school-related functions, which include but are not limited to: Caregiver Information Night (CIN), Immersion Term CIN, Immersion Open House, and Graduation;
    • Serve as a middle school  advisor for a group of about 12 students;
    • Perform other duties as assigned;


    Qualifications
    • Undergraduate or Master Degree in Spanish or related experience
    • Demonstrate computer literacy and proficiency (e.g., Google suite of applications, student information systems and online grade book programs)
    • Desire to work with primarily middle school students in an experiential and “hands-on” setting
    • Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered

  • 4th-12th Grade Vocal Arts Faculty (Part-Time)

    Title: Part-time (42%) 4th-12th grade Vocal Arts Faculty
    Reports to: Upper School Division Director

    The Role
    MVS is seeking an innovative and culturally inclusive vocal arts teacher committed to developing compassionate global citizens. The ideal candidate is a passionate and skillful vocal arts educator, who is eager to invest their talents in our choral program, as well as our broader Performing Arts program. The MVS Performing Arts Department creates a continuous learning experience in music and theater arts for students from Early Childhood through 12th grade. Grounded in the Orff method, students in EC-3 have the opportunity to engage in folk songs, movement activities, and pitched percussion performances. Beginning in grade 4, students choose between band, choir and strings ensembles and may continue in their respective discipline through 12th grade. Advanced level ensembles are offered at the middle school level, including an a cappella choir. Each discipline also offers an upper school ensemble (US choir, Jazz Band and String ensemble). Students also have the opportunity to engage in full-scale plays and musicals beginning in 4th grade.

    This new faculty member should establish a supportive and engaging environment for students ranging from 4th - 12th grade, demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate a teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. Ideal candidates will possess prior experience leading a cappella groups and mixed-level choirs. Additional duties could include co-teaching and designing a month-long immersive, interdisciplinary course, which may involve domestic and/or international travel.

    • Prepare and lead each of these groups in winter and spring concerts as well performances at important school functions such as Convocation and Graduation. Additional performances may be added as well;
    • Update Canvas and RamsConnect, MVS’s Learning Management System (LMS), regularly to keep both students and families informed about student progress and performance;
    • Fulfill all other faculty responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, such as; attending school-related functions, which include but are not limited to: Caregiver Information Night (CIN), Immersion Term CIN, Immersion Open House, and Graduation;
    • Perform other duties as assigned;

    Qualifications
    • Undergraduate or master’s degree in Music (performance or education) or other relevant degree is required;
    • Proficiency in piano accompaniment, preferred, but not required;
    • Ability to sight read and arrange/transpose vocal parts;
    • Audio engineering skills are a plus, but not necessary;
    • Candidates without prior teaching experience will be considered;

    The Role
    MVS is seeking an innovative and culturally inclusive mathematics teacher committed to developing inquisitive, critical thinkers, focused on understanding the ‘why’  behind mathematical principles versus the ‘how’ of following a formula. As a mathematics teacher at MVS, you will primarily teach students in grades 9-12, but could be asked to teach a middle school course or an upper school course that includes middle school students. Our mathematics faculty work collaboratively across divisions. Candidates should feel comfortable teaching regular and honors level courses in the following areas: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Multivariate Calculus.

    • Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 students;
    • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics;
    • Report to the Upper School Division Director;

    Qualifications
    • Possess a desire to work with pre-teen and teenage students in an experiential setting;
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues and parents;
    • Possess excellent communication skills;
    • Ideal candidates will possess prior experience teaching science in upper and/or middle school settings, advising clubs, coaching athletics, and/or leading student travel learning programs;
    • Undergraduate or advanced degree(s) in Mathematics, or other related degree; 
    • Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered;

      • Sweep and mop hard flooring surfaces daily.
      • Clean and sanitize tables, chairs, and common seating areas.
      • Empty all trash and recycling bins, replacing liners as needed.
      • Clean and restock restrooms, ensuring all dispensers are filled.
    • Second Floor Facilities:
      • Dust-mop and wet-mop hard floors; vacuum all carpeted areas.
      • Clean and sanitize offices, classrooms, and conference rooms.
      • Maintain common areas and hallways to ensure they are free of debris.
      • Clean restrooms and high-touch surfaces (door handles, light switches).
    • Other Duties: Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities and Grounds to ensure the effective operation of the facility and campus.

    Physical Requirements & Work Environment
    • Frequently lift equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
    • Crawl, climb ladders, twist, turn and reach in completing a variety of job duties.
    • Work outside in hot or cold conditions for extended periods of time.
    • Work in a wide variety of environments as found in all areas of the school.

    Qualifications 
    • At least 1 year of facilities and/or custodial experience in a school setting (preferred)

    The Role   
    The upper school volleyball assistant coach is tasked with overseeing the upper school volleyball program, which includes organizing practices, accompanying the teams to games, and teaching students volleyball skills and gameplay.     • Attend sport clinics and workshops at the direction of the Athletic Director.
    • Attain and maintain all mandatory certifications required for my sport including but not limited to OHSAA Coaches Toolbox training, CPR, van driving and first aid training.
    • Assume responsibility by returning and/or accounting for any uniforms or equipment loaned to the volleyball team, submitting a list of students to be billed for uniform items, and a list of damaged or disreputable uniforms at the end of each season.
    • Helping with practice setup and teardown of volleyball equipment.
    • Assist in helping student athletes with recommendations post season  and summer training and club team opportunities. 
    • Help prepare students for the collegiate level and with college recruitment.
    • Maintain records and protocols for upper school student athletes using MVS seasonal sports to meet State of Ohio graduation requirements in collaboration with the MVS Registrar.
    • Any other duties assigned by the Athletic Director.

    Qualifications
    • Experienced in the rules and regulations of volleyball.
    • BCI/FBI background check required.
    • Must be able to be on their feet for long period of time.

    • Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 students in Middle and Upper Schools;
    • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics;
    • Report to the appropriate Division Director.
     
    Qualifications
    • Possess a desire to work with students in an experiential setting;
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues and parents;
    • Possess excellent communication skills;
    • Ideal candidates will possess prior experience in teaching, advising clubs, coaching athletics, and/or leading student travel learning programs;
    • Undergraduate or advanced degree(s) in appropriate programs; 
    • Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered.

  • Substitute Teacher for Grades EC-12

    Position Summary
    The Miami Valley School’s (MVS) mission is to challenge young people of promise to become self-sustaining learners and compassionate global citizens. For over a half-century, MVS has provided a unique learning option for families in the Dayton, Ohio, community.     The Miami Valley School is seeking part-time substitute teachers who are excited about fulfilling our school’s mission and supporting students while full-time faculty are absent. Ideal candidates will be excited about working with students and delivering lessons designed by MVS faculty members. In addition, ideal candidates will have completed a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. While a background in education is preferred, we welcome candidates from a diverse range of employment backgrounds.
